16 May Water treatment for pharmaceutical cannabis production
The challenge
A commercial cannabis production facility under construction in the Mountain Kingdom (Lesotho) required pharmaceutical water of “Purified Water” standards in order to meet the European Union Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards. The objective of the facility is to export cannabis products to the European Union.
The only two sources of water available at the facility were borehole and surface run-off water. Raw water from the borehole was found to have a high bacterial load, a high concentration of metals, nitrates and total organic carbon.
Mop Tech’s contribution
Mop Tech provided a turnkey solution involving consulting, water sampling and testing, design and costing, and finally oversight with the building of the treatment facility.
The innovative design and costing phase involved a shortlist of treatment routes which were presented to the client which explored the relation between capital cost vs operating costs vs ease of operation (automation). In addition, the most cost effective and safe raw water and product water storage options were proposed.
The end result was a robust, multilayered treatment solution capable of producing 30 000 l/day of product water at peak with minimal operator input (automated). The water treatment facility was designed to be modular so that as the cannabis facility grows, it is easy to increase the water treatment capacity as well.
